Tracing the Footprints of Literary Ecology: The Relationship Between Humans and Nature in Pohon Pongo

In his research, the author aims to explain the environmental conditions in the short story entitled “Pohon Ponggo “. The author emphasizes that nature is a representation of various literary works. So this is in line with literary ecocriticism. Literary ecocriticism is considered capable of providing a broad perspective on human interaction with its environment. And the short story that is in line with literary ecocriticism is the short story entitled “Pongo Tree” by Rinto Adrino. Tells the story of a hellish foreman who only wants to fulfill his lust without caring about his environment. This study was analyzed using an Eco critical approach because it tells how humans relate to the environment.

The author uses a qualitative descriptive research method; the author also uses document recording techniques. In conducting the analysis, the author uses the Miles and Huberman model. Which model has three stages in the data analysis process, namely data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions? In order for data or information to be obtained comprehensively, there needs to be a deep understanding, ingenuity, creativity, sensitivity, conceptual, experience, and expertise of the researcher. 

This research provides an interesting perspective on how literary works can be a medium for highlighting environmental issues. The use of an ecocritical approach in analyzing the short story “The Pongo Tree” allows readers to understand the complexity of the relationship between humans and nature, especially in the context of orangutan conservation and the impact of climate change. The author stated that he found ideas or ideas such as a drought disaster that was threatening. Apart from causing smoke due to fires which cause pollution, this problem also spreads to the animal sector where there are protected animals but many of them burn to death. in the short story “The Pongo Tree” tells of the ferocity of project foremen who want to control the forest for their own interests, so that the environmental ecosystem becomes threatened.

This study successfully demonstrates how ecocritical studies can be applied to literary works to reveal the representation of environmental conditions. Through the analysis of the short story “Pohon Pongo”, the researcher is able to identify and interpret significant environmental elements, such as the impact of the long drought and the relationship between humans and orangutans. In conclusion, this short story not only functions as a literary work, but also as a medium to raise awareness of environmental and conservation issues. This study makes an important contribution to understanding the role of literature in environmental discourse and highlights the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in the study of literature and ecology.
